How it works

From first note to results.

Headphones in, phone at arm's length, a quiet room. Here is what happens next.

1

Voice setup

Speak a sentence, sing a step test up and down with the trainer, hold "ah", "ee" and "oo" on a comfortable note, and slide a siren through your range. Passaggio now knows your speaking pitch, range, voice type, bridge and what your own vowels sound like.

2

Choose your style and a lesson

Choose one of the following categories to suit your voice style: classical, musical theatre, pop, rock, jazz or folk. Then take Today's plan, a course and level, a warm-up, a favourite, or one of your own songs. Every lesson is shifted into your range before it starts.

3

The trainer sets you up

Using the latest in speech technology, a natural-sounding trainer is with you through every exercise — themed in an Italian accent, as befits Passaggio's roots — with thousands of corrections and words of encouragement personalised to you. A real singer sings your starting note in your key, the piano counts you in, and from then on it plays each note just before its bar.

4

Sing with the note bars

Note bars scroll across the screen and your voice draws a live line through them, gold when you're on the desired note. At the top you see the note you're singing, how far off you are, whether you're in chest or head voice, and one word for how you sound. Stay in tune and your streak grows; six in a row and the bars catch fire.

5

Corrections, when earned

The first time a habit is heard it's noted silently. The second time a brass card appears with the fix; tap it to hear "not like this… like this" and see the drawing. Keep repeating it and the explanation climbs the seven-rung ladder.

6

Results

A weighted score, round by round, what was seen once, what to work on, and a "Working on" chip for any weak area the lesson fed. 80 % opens the next level.

Under the hood

Why it feels instant, and why it feels fair.

It hears you the moment you sing

Your voice is checked a hundred times a second, so the line on screen moves with you, not a beat behind. The app also measures your headphones' own delay, so the bars line up with what you hear.

It finds the right note

Two different pitch-finders work together and agree on the note before it's shown. Lip trills and hums get their own listening mode, so a buzz or a hum isn't read as the wrong octave.

It compares you with you

Breathy, pressed, twang, high larynx, nasal, strain, fry, belt and distortion are read against your own recorded vowels, moved along your pitch trend — never a population norm.

Chest voice, head voice, and the join

Setup measured where your voice changes gear, so the app can tell a high note you've joined smoothly from one you've dragged up in chest voice, and it credits the smooth one.

Smooth on screen

The bars, the line and the flames run at your phone's full frame rate and are locked to the sound, so nothing stutters or drifts while you sing.

Nothing leaves your phone

Every recording and result stays on your phone, locked with a key only your phone holds. The app doesn't even ask for internet access, so there is nothing to upload.
